The 1952 Season

Win/Loss (AL Finish) Best Hitter (Average) Best Pitcher (Wins)
93-61 (2) Dale Mitchell (.323) Early Wynn (23)

The Indians’ record in 1952 was exactly equal to their record in 1951. This year, though, they only finished two games behind the New York Yankees for the American League Championship.

Early Wynn

An amazing seven Indians players made the American League All-Star team: catcher Jim Hegan, pitchers Bob Lemon and Mike Garcia, outfielders Larry Doby and Dale Mitchell, second baseman Bobby Avila, and third baseman Al Rosen. Mitchell, Rosen, Doby, Lemon, Garcia, Mitchell, Luke Easter, and Early Wynn all received votes for the American League Most Valuable Player award, with Wynn, Lemon, Garcia, and Rosen placing in the top ten
1952 also saw great performances by pitchers Lemon, Wynn, and Garcia, who won 22, 23, and 22 games respectively. Bob Feller had an off year, going 9-13, but pitched a one-hitter against the Washington Senators (which he lost, 1-0).

Quincy Trouppe

The Indians used the first ever black pitcher-catcher combination in the American League when reliever Sam Jones comes in to pitch with backup catcher Quincy Trouppe is behind the plate.
